The Atanga Peace Project Inc. was founded on several fundamental principles of life shared by Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Iban Atanga. It has always been their belief that Peace at any level of the community from Family to Government can be achieved by practicing Patience, Tolerance Vigilance, Humility and Forgiveness and Love for our fellow human being. Joseph Iban Atanga and Marceline Neza Ndifor married on January 15, 1951 and together they made community service their life’s mission. They raised their children using the moral values passed unto them by both of their parents who were not exposed to Christianity, the same values they have come to embrace as part of their Catholic faith. Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Iban Atanga did not have the privilege of having a formal education but used the resources they were blessed with to give education not only to their children but to countless others.
They involved their children from very young ages to serve their community in age appropriate activities. Their community service involved participation in areas of education and providing for the less fortunate through their church, political service and promotion of culture and cultural diversity. Their children were encouraged to use their own talents to give back to the community. It is for this reason that on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, their daughter Mrs. Anne Atanga Foju suggested that since some of the children were already active in community service there will be no better anniversary gift to their parents than a project that honors their legacy. This idea gave birth to the Atanga Peace Project.
